Tonight’s the Night Saturday, Sep 12 2009

Tonight’s the Big Easy Gumbo Party in Highland Park. We’re stirring the final ingredients in and decorating the patio. If you can’t make it, we’ll be posting pictures in a couple days.

Thanks to all our sponsors for their donations and thanks to all our friends for making this a success!

We’re Cooking! Tuesday, Sep 8 2009

Yes, the gumbo for the party has been started. Roger slow cooked 4 different colored roux for our four entrées – blond, hazelnut, red and black. I smoked 20 pounds of chicken on the Weber kettle. Janet Weinberg was amazing! She sailed through a sack of onions,  and a grocery bag of green peppers and celery for the Creole holy trinity.

The aroma in the kitchen was fantastic!

I put together the preliminaries for the vegetarian gumbo: holy trinity, hazelnut roux, fresh thyme and parsley. Everything got double bagged and popped into the freezer. We’ll finish it up at Janet’s house the day before the party.

Abita Beer is in the house! Friday, Sep 4 2009

I just picked up 14 cases of Abita Beer at House of Glunz for the Big Easy Gumbo Party. Seeing the Abita logo made me pine for New Orleans.

A big thanks to the  folks at Abita Brewing for their selections. They sent us

  • Jockamo IPA,
  • Abita Amber,
  • Turbo Dog,
  • Abita Lite,
  • Restoration Pale Ale
  • Abita Root Beer

I have a special affection for Restoration Pale Ale. Abita brewed it to help rebuild New Orleans. The brewery donates a percentage of the sales to Katrina victims. Bierkraft.com says, Restoration is “A golden/pale ale with mild bitterness and subtle citrus flavor derived from hops.”

Join us at the Big Easy Gumbo Party to taste all the Abita brews!
